Mrs. S. J Britson Died Thursday; Funeral on Saturday

Roland, July 7--Mrs. Sam Britson, 81, who has been critically ill suffering from cancer for some time passed away at her home here Thursday afternoon.

Mrs. Britson, whose maiden name was Sarah Grindem, was born in Lisbon, Ill., on August 7, 1858, and if she had lived to celebrate her birthday she would have been eighty-one years old. When she was fifteen year old her mother died and she had to mother the younger children.

In 1873 she came with her father to Story county and on July 3, 1877 she was married to Sam Britson.* The first year they lived on what is now the J. S. Danielson farm, next they moved to the farm now known as the K. J. Hill place and later they moved to the Britson farm east of town. There they lived until 1909, when they moved to Highmore, S. D., where they resided for two years. They then returned to Roland and purchased the home in which she had since lived.

Mr. Britson passed away in 1913*. She was the mother of three children. The youngest, Cyrus, passed away in 1913. The others are Ed Britson of McCallsburg and Mrs. Sam Bakka, who has been tenderly caring for her mother the past year. She is also survived by a brother, J. R. Grindem of Roland, and three sisters, Mrs. B. J. Talbott of Pasadena, California, Mrs. L. B. Collins of Woodward, Oklahoma, and Mrs. John Dobson of Kiowa, Kansas. She also leaves twenty-one grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at Bergens church, where the decease had always been a faithful member an attended as long as she was able to go. Rev. M. O. Sumstad will be in charge. Burial will be in the Roland cemetery.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Before Americanized his name, Sam Britson was known as Sjur Halvorsson Britson. Sjur "Sam" Britson died on 31 July 1930 in Roland, Story County, Iowa (not 1913 as stated.) Their son, Cyrus Britson, died 5 February 1914 (not 1913.)
