From Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home & Crematory obituary, Nevada and Maxwell, Story County, Iowa:

Gail Leah Baker, 70, of Ames, passed away Friday, July 26, 2019, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 30 at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada. A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 31 at St. Paul Lutheran Church (610 15th Street) in Ames. Private inurnment will be at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery in Nevada.

Gail was born February 10, 1949, in Nevada, the daughter of Harold D. and Dorothy L. (DeWall) Holder. She graduated from Nevada High School in 1967 and in June of 1967, Gail married John Schomaker to which three children were born; they later divorced. On February 10, 1989, she was united in marriage to Jerry Baker at the First United Methodist Church in Ames. Gail worked in medical records for Mary Greeley Medical Center and Boone County Hospital and retired from Story County Medical Center in 2011 where she was a unit secretary.

Gail loved to spend time with her beloved dachshund, Stella Mae. She cherished her time with her grandchildren and would never miss a sporting event or band concert. Gail was the definition of a great mother and will be remembered as a protector, disciplinarian and friend. She was a very loving mother and wife, who often sacrificed her own wants and needs to put others first.

Gail is survived by her husband, Jerry of Ames; her children: Dean Schomaker of Bennington, NE; Mark Schomaker of Ames and Lynn (John) Sellmeyer of Bondurant; her step-children: Shawn Baker, Shannon (Brenda) Baker and Ryan (Katie) Baker all of Slater; her brother Dale (Shawn) Holder of Davenport; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements.
