Obituaries

John Herschel Van Hook
March 30, 1920 to May 8, 1995

John Herschel Van Hook, 75, Ames, died May 8 at his home of heart failure.

John was born March 20, 1920 to William "Van" Van Hook and Mary Myers Van Hook in Farrar.

He graduated from Maxwell High School.

He served in the Coast Guard during World War II.

He was a member of Maxwell Christian Church.

John was one of the founders of the Maxwell Veterans of Foreign Wars and served with the disabled American Veterans Post in Des Moines.

John lived in Ames since 1994, when he moved from Dubuque.

He was retired from KASI radio in Ames, where he sold advertising.

He was an avid horse racing fan.

He is proceeded in death by his parents and his brother Wendell Van Hook.

He is survived by: two daughters, Nancy Coleman, Peoria, Ill., and Emily Witkiend, Peoria; a sister, Rose Marie Reeves, Ames; and two brothers, William Van Hook, Bloomington, Ind., and Harold Van Hook, Dunedin, Fla.

Graveside services were Thursday, May 11 at the Maxwell Municipal Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Cooper Funeral Home, Maxwell.
