Former Story County Man Died In Kansas

Joseph Halley, 80, early day resident of Nevada, died September 1, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Carr at St. Francis, Kansas, according to word reaching friends here.

Joseph Edward Halley was a son of Wilson Halley, once a resident of this city. He was a native of Ohio but came west, first to Missouri and then to Iowa, locating in Story county.

At the funeral which was held at the Methodist church of St. Francis the following obituary was read:

"Joseph Edward Halley, son of Wilson Halley and Betsy Halley was born in Delaware county, Ohio, October 2, 1847 an departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Carr, nine miles south of St. Francis, September 1, 1928, at the age of 80 years, 10 months and 30 days.

"His early life was spent with his parents in Missouri and Iowa. September 30, 1875, he was united in marriage to Sarepta Margaret Kulow, of Maxwell, Iowa. To this union were born eleven children all of whom survive him. The children are: Mrs. Rosa Carr, L. D. Halley, Mrs. Sarah Roberts and Mrs. Eliza Kyle of St. Francis; Mrs. Anna Griffith of Des Moines, Iow; Mrs. Amy Chaffin of Elizabeth, Colorado; Mrs. Mary Motter of Lyons, Kansas, Mrs. Hazel Harrington of Rye, Colorago; Mrs. Edith Harrington of Peetz, Colorado; Mrs. Elva Williamson of Stratton, Colorado and Mrs. Vernal Blinn of Topeka, Kansas. His wife departed this life, March 24, 1919. He is also survived by fifty-two grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Lovina McGregor, of Casper, Wyoming and Mrs. Bernice Forest of Lane Worth, Florida; two brothers, Benjamin A. Halley of Bassett, Nebraska, and George Halley of Phoenix, Arizona.

"In 1900, he moved with his family to Atwood, Kansas, where he resided until October, 1902, when he moved to the farm south of St. Francis, where he lived until 1918, moving then to the city of St. Francis where he made his home up to three years ago, since which time he has made his home with his children.

"In early manhood he united with the Methodist Episcopal church. He was an active church worker as long as his health permitted being a charter members of the M. E. church of Lawn Ridge and at the time of his death, a member of the M. E. church of St. Francis."
