Funeral Services for Joseph J. Allen at Iowa Center Church

Maxwell, July 31--Funeral rites for Joseph J. Allen, 76, bachelor Elwell farmer, who died at Mary Greeley hospital, Ames, July 28, following an operation for injuries sustained in a tractor accident earlier in the week, were held Friday afternoon at the church in Iowa Center, followed by burial in the family lot in Evergreen cemetery there.*

The church was well filled with relatives and old friends, gathered to pay a tribute of respect to the next to the last of this pioneer family. The service was in charge of Rev. C. E. Lookingbill of Nevada.

Joseph J. Allen, son of James and Susan Allen, was born July 22, 1863 and died at Mary Greeley hospital at Ames, July 28, 1843.

Seven sisters and three brothers preceded him in death, and he leaves on brother, Amos of Elwell and several nieces and nephews and many friends to mourn his passing.

Born on a farm a half mile north of Maxwell on the Iowa Center road, of a pioneer family, he had lived his entire life in Indian Creek township, with the exception of two years he spent in Nebraska.

Besides active as a farmer, with his brother Amos, he had operated threshing machines for many years, and the elder brother was getting the threshing outfit in shape to start operations, when Joe met with his fatal accident.
