Funeral services for Mrs. Linda Bates, former Nevada woman who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Day in Madrid, January 11, were held Monday at the Methodist church in Madrid and burial was in the Cambridge cemetery.

She was born May 18, 1850 Linda Hubbard, one of nine children of Hugh and Abigale Hubbard, New Yorkers who settled in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin and it was there at the age of 23 years that she was united in marriage to Michael Fries. Shortly after their marriage they came to Iowa and settled near Cambridge, and there it was that the husband died in September 1892.

To this union two daughters and one son were born. The first two Nellie Maud and Newton Claude died in early childhood, while the youngest, Marie Ethel, grew to woman hood and became the wife of Joe Day, now of Madrid and it was at her home where the mother passed the last four years of her life.

Married the second time to H. W. Bates*, Nevada became her home and here she continued to live until she entered the home of her daughter in Madrid. Mr. Bates has been dead a number of years.

Mrs. Bates is survived by her daughter and husband, one granddaughter, Mrs. Gladys Miller of Cherokee, and one great grandson, Joe Miller.

Mrs. Bates was the last of family of nine children and she is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bates was a faithful and devout Christian. She was converted at the age of 16 and united with the Congregation church. When the family came to Iowa they united with the Methodist church, where she held her membership at the time of her death. She was a granddaughter of the D. A. R.
