Pioneer Physician Dies Wednesday at Home In Ames
Ames, April 6--Dr. C. A. Aplin, a resident of Ames for the past 51 years, passed away at his home, 515 Douglas, Wednesday morning about 5:30 from old age and complications.
He was born in Hocking county, near Logan, Ohio, in 1856, and came to Iowa with his family in 1866. For nearly 20 years he lived with his family on farms in Mahaska, Jasper and Story counties, until 1887 he went to Washington territory. During the two years there he worked in the Puget Sound and Yakima Valley regions.
In 1889, he returned to Iowa and entered the medical school at the University of Iowa, from which he received his medical degree in 1893. In the same year he opened practice in Ames. For 41 years he had occupied his offices in the Union National Bank building.
From 1906 to 1908, 1910 to 1912 and from 1928 to 1934, ten years in all, Dr. Aplin was city health officer of Ames.
Dr. Aplin was one of four brothers who were physicians. The other three preceded him in death. Two uncles of his also were doctors, and several cousins were members of the profession. His brother, Arthur, once practiced at Cambridge.
Long a Mason, Dr. Aplin was a member of the Blue Lodge, the chapter, the council and the Consistory. Hehad taken 14 degrees in the Des Moines Consistory and was a 50 year Mason.
He married Elizabeth Barr in 1904. He is survived by one son, Lieut. Paul B. Aplin of Camp Langdon, Portsmouth, N. H., one daughter, Mrs. Julian K. Billings of Omaha, Neb., one sister, Mrs. Anna A. Meek formerly of Minburn, Ia., and a grandson, Kem Billings.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p. m. in Adams Chapel with Rev. A. H. Barker in charge. Burial with a masonic service, will be in the Ames cemetery.
