Rites in Story City for Sampson Wierso, 70, Longtime Resident
Last rites for S. S. Wierson were held in Story City Thursday afternoon, Feb. 15, from the Larson-Peterson funeral home at 1:30 and from the St. Petri Lutheran church at 2 p. m. The Rev. S. T. Nelson officiated.
Rev. Nelson sang "Den Stor Hvide Flok" and as a closing number Mrs. Robert Kenny sang "The Lord's Prayer."
Casket bearers were Lester Doolittle, Jesse Johnson, Theodore Hermanson, T. M. Holm, Bert Hill and Nels Mathiason. The body was laid to rest in the Story City cemetery.
Born in 1867
Sampson Wierson, son of Wier and Sarah Sampson, was born in Norway on April 27, 1867, he died at his home in Story City Feb. 12, 1951, at the age of 83 years, ten months and 15 days.
He was baptized in Norway, and received his first religious training there.
During the summer of 1874 the family emigrated to America, coming directly to Story City which became their permanent home. This family, as many other Norwegian immigrants, endured many years of struggle and hardship as they founded a new home. The children worked at an early age and attended school during the winter.
Mr. Wierson was confirmed in the St. Petri Lutheran church by the Rev. Nils Amlund on Oct. 30, 1881. Rev. Amlund also officiated at the wedding of Mr. Wierson and Emily Ericson on May 28, 1892.
Five children were born to this union of which three survive, Vernie, Theoroy, and John, all of Story City.
An active farmer, Mr. Wierson retire in 1938. He also interested the civic and church activities, performing on committees. His kindly and sincere disposition won him many friends, young and old.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Sept. 30, 1933, his eldest daughter, in 1919. Mrs. S. J. Wierson, whose children were raised in Sampson Wierson home, and his youngest son, Willard, in 1920.
Besides his three children, others surviving are four grandsons and four great grandchildren, two brothers, Peter of Williston, N. D., and Martin of Story City, and one sister, Mrs. Sopie Danielson of Chula Vista, Calif.
Throughout the many years Mr. Wierson enjoyed good health until the spring of 1949, after which he suffered several strokes. He was confined to bed from Dec. 20, 1949, until his death.
