Roger John Spaete, 69, of Nevada, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at his home in Nevada surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, December 3 at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 4 at Cornerstone Church in Ames. Cremation will follow the service. Inurnment of cremated remains with military honors will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 5 at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery in Nevada.

Roger was born September 20, 1949, in Neillsville, Wisconsin the son of Robert and Delores (Rittmanic) Spaete. He graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1967 and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1971 with his bachelor’s degree in Biology. Following college, Roger enlisted in the United States Army, serving until his honorable discharge in 1974. On June 3, 1972, Roger was united in marriage to Rebecca Ann Arneson at the First Baptist Church in Maquoketa. He worked as a lab tech for the N.A.D.C. for 30 years, retiring in 2005 and was an active member of Cornerstone Church in Ames and a former member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Ames.

Roger had a passion for children, working in the church nursery at Grand Avenue Baptist and Cornerstone for 26 years. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and birdwatching. Roger also liked geocaching and playing with anything that had a remote. In 2015, Roger had the honor of going on a Story County Freedom Flight.

Roger is survived by his wife of 46 years, Rebecca of Nevada; his son, Joshua Spaete of Nevada; his daughter, Sarah (Jonathan) Bunge of Ames; his grandson, Samuel Bunge of Ames; his mother-in-law, Bobbie Arneson of Nevada; his brothers: Robert (Madellen) Spaete of Colorado Springs, CO, Daniel (Darlis) Spaete of Bettendorf, Steven (Karen) Spaete of Tucson, AZ and Michael (Danielle) Spaete of Cape Coral, FL; his sisters: Norma Mangler of Dubuque, Susan (Joe) Vorbeck of Maquoketa, Barbara (Stephen) Miller of Maquoketa and Anne (Dave) Coffman of Muscatine. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his father-in-law, Robert Bruce Arneson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City.
