Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Carl Eric Hermanson, of Story City, died on December 19, 2018, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. He was born on August 29, 1948, in Ames, Iowa, son of Robert and Phyllis (Malmanger) Hermanson.

Carl was a 1966 graduate of Story City High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1970. A gifted musician, he served in the 5th Army Band and the West Point Band during his military service in the early 1970s and later played with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

After returning to the Midwest he worked at a number of construction jobs and developed skills in finish carpentry and fine woodworking. Before retiring, he spent nearly 20 years in the shipping department at ALMACO in Nevada. After his father died in 2000 Carl moved to Story City and faithfully cared for his mother until her death in 2012.

While many of his generation in the ’60s were rocking out to the Beatles, Carl was chilling out to the music of Nancy Wilson and J.J. Johnson. His musical tastes and skills continued to evolve, especially during his retirement. He enhanced the life of the Story City community by sharing his gifts of music, gardening, time, and resources. An avid walker around town, he also enjoyed exploring the woodland areas and waterways of rural Story County, and on occasion he would spend a full day hiking from Nevada to Story City. His literary heroes consisted of other free spirits; among them were Edward Abbey, Wendell Berry, and Henry David Thoreau.

Carl lived a full and generous life until his last days. He made many friends and could always entertain with stories, eagerly passing on the knowledge he had gained through his interests in nature, music, and how life should be lived. He will be missed by so many of us.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Philip, and his brother-in-law Larry Rosenfield. He is survived by his sisters Anne Mundahl and Sylvia Hermanson, brother-in-law Tom Mundahl, sister-in-law Karen Hermanson, special friend Anne Howard, niece Hannah Imankulov and her husband Myktybek, nephew Noah Mundahl, great-nephew and great-niece Kai and Mira Imankulov, and many cousins.

Memorial donations may be directed to the charity of one’s choice or to St. Petri Lutheran Church, Story City. Soderstrum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
