REV. ERNEST W. QUAM

Funeral services for Rev. Ernest W. Quam, 62, were held in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Story City, Saturday, October 8, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. C. A. Gisselquist in charge. Brief messages were also brought by pastors Elmer Valen, Decorah, Ia.; and Chester Olson of Leland, Ill. Mrs. Harold Olson was the organist.

Pastors Gisselquiest, Rolfe Johnstad, Perry Sampson and Donald Berg sang, "I Love to Tell the Story" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." A brother, Delbert Quam sang, "A Closer Walk with Thee," and also, at the graveside service, he sang "Take My Hand, Precious Lord."

Burial was in the Story City Municipal Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Hauge, Steven Quam, Keith Hauge, Kent Quam, Mark Hauge, Dick Sande, Arden Johnson and Doug Quam.

Ernest W. Quam, eldest of five children was born to James and Sella Quam in Clear Lake Township, Hamilton County, Ia., November 2, 1914, an died Wednesday morning, Oct. 5 at Riverside Manor Nursing Home, Ames.

He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Stanhope on December 6, 2924, by Rev. Omar Brenne, and confirmed by Rev. N. Okerlind, at Rake, Iowa. His early years were spent in communities at Rake, Ia., Frost and Elmore, Minn. In 1930 he moved with his parents to a farm near Randall, Ia., where he graduated from high school. He attended Waldorf College, Forest City, for two years and graduated in 1938 from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. On June 7, 1942 he received a Bachelor of Theology Degree from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. and was ordained in Elim Lutheran Church, Randall, Ia., on June 7, 1942. He accepted a call to Spicer, Minn. parish.

On May 10, 1944 he was married to Margaret Sunde, Estherville, Ia. They served parishes in Spicer, Grattinger, Ia., Iola and Chetek, Wisc., and Thor, Ia. Assisting in organizing Ingham Lake Bible Camp was evidence of his devoted interest in young people. He also served on the World Mission Board.

Because of ill health, he resigned as pastor of the Thor parish, and with his wife and daughter, Mary, moved to Story City in June of 1970. He was hospitalized from July 1972 until January 1973, when he entered Riverside Manor at Ames, Ia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Sella (Teigland) Quam. Surviving are his wife, Margaret of Story City; one daughter, Mrs. Daniel (Mary) Burkhart, and son-in-law, Daniel; two grandchildren, Timothy and Kara Burkhart of West Union, Ia.; also one sister and three brothers: Mrs. Gaylord (Lila) Hauge and Arden Quam both of rural route, Jewell, Delbert Quam, rural route, Story City, and Luther Quam of Ames, eight nieces and eight nephews.
