Carl Smedal is death at age 79, rites Thursday

A long-time Story County lawyer, Carl A. Smedal, 79, died early Tuesday at Oak Park Manor where he had been a patient the past month.

Born Jan. 3, 1890 at Ridgeway, Ia., Smedal attended Luther College in Decorah and Drake University. After graduation, Smedal practiced law in Story County for 54 years, including a time in Nevada in the Smedal and Addison law firm. He was associated with the firm of Smedal and Maurer in Ames in recent years.

He had been ill since suffering a stroke in April of 1968.

Smedal served on the Fifth Congressional District State Judicial Nominating Commission while a member of the Iowa State Bar Association, and was also a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Bar Association, the Iowa Defense Counsel Association and the special commission on Criminal Law.

He was past president and director of the Iowa State Bar Foundation and member and past president of the Story County Bar Association.

In addition, Smedal belonged to the Elks Club, American Legion and St. John's by the campus Episcopal Church.

Smedal is survived by his wife May, a son Carl Gregar of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one daughter, Mrs. Robert Underwood of Elmherst, Ill.; one brother, Olav of Ames; one sister Mrs. C. O. Highland of Story City; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. and Mrs. G. Smedal, and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from St. John's by the campus Episcopal Church, with burial in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
