Mrs. Pete Mathison killed in accident

A two-car accident 2 1/2 miles west of Nevada claimed the life of Mrs. Pete Mathison of Nevada Monday afternoon. She was Story County's sixth traffic victim of 1968.

Patrolman Jim Gustafson said the accident happened on old 30 about 4:20 p.m. Mrs. Mathison, 67, was driving a 1968 Ford sedan and was eastbound.

Gustafson said indications were that a line of traffic ahead of Mrs. Mathison had slowed to allow a vehicle to turn. He said Mrs. Mathison apparently braked rapidly to avoid hitting the traffic line ahead and the car swerved to the left and into the incoming lant.

Westbound was a 1968 Bruick driven by Rex Purviance, 513 9th, Ames. The Purviance car hit the Mathison vehicle, which had slid sideways, in the right front panel.

Mrs. Mathison was killed almost instantly by the impact. Purviance was taken to Mary Greeley with face and chest injuries.

The two cars went off the north side of the road, through the ditch, and up into a plowed field. Neither car overturned and neither was thrown from their car. There were no passengers in either car.

Mrs. Mathison's death is the sixth in the county. Eight months of the year went by before the first highway fatality on August 18 when Douglas Staples, 20, Dows, was killed on I-35.

Since that time Mrs. Janet Olson, Nevada; Stanley Granger, Maxwell; Richard Foster, Ames, and Clinton Sheffield, Story City, have died in car crashes.
