Car - Truck Crash Kills Jewell Man

STORY CITY-John Johnson, 69, of Jewell was killed about midnight Friday in a collision involving two cars and a truck on Highway 69 just 50 yards from the Hamilton-Story county line.

Wife Serious

The victim's wife, Mrs. Bertha Johnson, who was riding with him was taken to a hospital here in serious condition. A daughter and Mrs. Ed Baldus of Kamrar, were also riding in the Johnson car but were not injured seriously.

They were returning home after making funeral arrangements for Johnson's mother, Mrs. Knut Johnson, who died Friday morning in the Gilmore Nursing Home in Nevada.

Highway patrolman said a truck driven by Raymond Sheets, 25, of Dallas Center, swerved into the left lane and crashed into the Johnson car. The second car, driven by Herbert Olson, 26, of Thompson, was following the Johnson car and ran into the rear of it.

Patrolman said they believe Sheets fell asleep at the wheel of his truck.

In the Olson car were his wife and five other passengers including an 8-year-old boy. None were injured seriously.

Johnson was fatally injured with a broken neck and chest injured. His wife had two broken wrists, suffers from shock and lacerations. Deputy John Stark who was at the scene, said charges will be filed against Sheets.
