SHERMAN HELVIG

STORY CITY--Funeral services for Sherman Helvig, were held on Wednesday afternoon, January 21, at the Larson Funeral Home in Story City at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. George Bever of the Federated Church in Jewell officiated.

Mrs. J. B. Harris of Jewell served as organist and accompanied Mrs. A. L. Fleenor, soloist of Jewell, who sang "Good Night Here and Good Morning Up There" and "Beyond the Sunset."

Interment was in the Story City Municipal cemetery and the firing squad of the American Legion Post 633 of Williams, Iowa conducted military rites. Pallbearers were Robert Helvig, Des Moines, Clarence Helvig and Otto Hanson of Roland, B. E. Gandrup, Casper Torkelson and T. M. Holm.

Life Sketch

Casper Sherman Helvig, son of Ole K. and Alice Torkelson Helvig was born in Story City, Iowa, May 16, 1897, and died at the age of 61. Death was caused by a heart attack.

Mr. Helvig was baptized and confirmed in the St. Petri Lutheran Church and attended Story City schools. He served in World War I attaining the rank of Sgt. 1st Class in the Motor Transportation Corps.

In September 1924, he was united in marriage to Lela E. Millett of Jewell, at Council Bluffs.

Two daughters, Delores Louise and Beverley Jean were born to this union. Her church membership was transferred to the Federated Church in Jewell at this time.

Mr. Helvig was a barber and worked at his trade in Jewell, Radcliffe, Story City, Williams and the last year and a half in Iowa Falls.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 633 of Williams and had served five years as adjutant and also a finance officer. He was a member of the Elks Lodge at Iowa Falls.

While at Williams he was a school bus driver and was interested and worked in youth sports activities. He was interested in sports, hunting and fishing.

Mr. Helvig was preceded in death by his parents, his elder brother, Earl; two brothers in infancy and two grandsons.

Surviving are his daughters, Mrs. Delores Marshall of Wilimington, Mass. and Mrs. Beverley Janecek, Lincoln, Neb.; two grandsons, John Sherman and James Dwight Janecek; one granddaughter, Jean Louise Janecek; one sister, Mrs. Hazel (Arvin J.) Nelson, and a brother, Palmer L. Helvig of Story City; three nephews and two nieces.
