Veteran Businessman Nate Levin Dies Here at Age of Eighty-five

Nathan Levin, 85, a Nevada merchant for 40 years or more, died at 6:35 this morning (Tuesday, Aug. 4) at the Story County Hospital. His death followed an illness of two years or more.

Services will be held at Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rabbi of Bethel Jacob Synagogue in charge. Burial will be in the Jewish Glendale Cemetery.

Levin is survived by his wife, Rose, and children Sam, Des Moines; Selma (Mrs. Irving Fitting) of Seattle; Jake, Oelwein; Dorothy (Mrs. Fritz Swoboda), Omaha and Sarah (Mrs. Louis Sorenson) Nevada; and by step-children, Julius Krantman and James Krantman, both of Marshalltown; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Levin was born in Poland. His business interests in Nevada were diversified. He owned and operated a grocery store and salvage yard on Main Street for many years until ill health and advancing age forced his retirement two years ago.

During the depression years and for some poverty-stricken families in recent years, Levin's generosity was part of his character. The candy for the kids, the extra slice of lunch meat for the hard-up family, the charge accounts he never tried to collect -- all helped establish Nevada's eldest businessman as one of its most beloved.

In the spring of this year the Chamber of Commerce, while honoring its veteran businessmen, paid special tribute to Levin with a lapel pin and warm applause at its recognition dinner, addressed by Gov. Harold Hughes.
