Obituary for James Edward McCormick
Born 12-24-1948. Kicked the bucket at home 10-12-2018. Born to Doris (Hoover) and Ned McCormick.
Jim was born in Ames and attended school at St. Cecilia, Central High School, and Ames High. He graduated in 1967. In 1969, he married Martha Erickson, also from Ames. Jim farmed from an early age with guidance from his grandfather, Frank Hoover. He farmed in the Story City area for many years with the help from our dear friend, Paul Ericson, who became like a son. Jim taught many of their friends’ children how to drive, work, and have fun as they would spend summers at Jim & Martha’s farm camp. Jim was a good steward of the land. The earth meant a lot to him. He raised hogs while Martha raised chickens.
After retiring to Ames, Jim spent a lot of time in Hawaii with his classmate and surrogate brother, Alan Livingston. What they didn’t do together has not been done! It was one of the best times of his life. Jim had a love of cars and enjoyed racing them near Omaha. He delivered Meals on Wheels at the speed of light! Fridays were reserved for the Friday Afternoon Club. It was important to him to be with Bob, Tom, Brian, Obo, and Ed. Jim lived life on his terms to the fullest! Jim enjoyed camping and riding his motorcycle all over the United States.
Jim is survived by wife Martha, sisters-in-law Janet, Mary, and Karen, nieces Ellen and Kathy Jo, nephews Eric and John, many cousins and Aunt Madgel. Preceded in death by his mother and father, grandparents Sophie and Frank Hoover, Madge and James McCormick, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral service will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church on Friday, November 30, at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Celebration of Jim’s life will be held December 1, 1:00-3:00 at 928 North 4th Street in Ames.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Bliss Cancer Center or Israel Family Hospice House.
