Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Marietta (Harrigan) Blanchet, 91, of Ames, Iowa passed away at Israel Hospice House October 11, 2018 wrapped in love and prayer by family and friends.

Visitation will be held 4:30-6:30 pm Monday, October 15 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 2900 Hoover Ave, Ames. The vigil and rosary service commence following visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am Tuesday, October 16. Interment will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Danbury, Iowa.

Marietta was born September 9, 1927 in Danbury, Iowa to Clarence and Helen (DeLay) Harrigan. She graduated from Corpus Christi Catholic High School, Fort Dodge, Iowa. Advancing her education, she applied her AA degree in business while working at Olson Jewelry in Fort Dodge.

Marietta joined Leo Blanchet in Holy Matrimony at Corpus Christi Catholic Church on June 25, 1949. To this union four children were born. For nearly 60 years Marietta and Leo raised their children and worked on the Dayton, Iowa family farm.

Marietta pursued life with vigor. She enjoyed sharing harvests from the farm’s orchards and gardens. Her jams and jellies were a treat to many. Lucky the person served a slice of her lemon pie. Marietta’s homemade angel food cake even won a blue ribbon at the county fair. Her Irish heritage naturally lent itself to generously sharing jokes and competitive games of Ten Point Pitch. To celebrate her 91st birthday, she took her bicycle for a spin, “Just to see if I could it.”

Marietta is known for her unwavering faith. She traveled the globe on pilgrimages and daily attended Mass and adoration. Marietta prayed an incalculable number of rosaries for loved ones, strangers, and peace. Christ the King Catholic Church Altar Society, Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and Disabled American Veterans are among the organizations which benefitted from Marietta’s dedicated service.

Marietta is survived by her children: Suzanne (Dale) Petersen of Ames, Robert (Suzy) Blanchet of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Brenda (Dave) Houck of Bremerton, Washington and Jane Ann (Brian) Becicka of West Des Moines; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters Patricia Harrigan and Stella (Bill) Webber; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters Dolores and infant Cecilia; brothers Robert, John, Slater, Vincent, Maurice and infant Gerard; as well as several nieces and nephews.
