MRS. MARY EDWARDS DIED LAST EVENING

WIDOW OF CIVIL WAR VETERAN WHO ANSWERED 'TAPS' IN 1933

Mrs. Mary Edwards, 86, beloved Nevada woman, passed away at her home, 1117 H avenue at 8:45 Tuesday evening.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 from the Methodist Episcopal church, which has long been her church home, in charge of her pastor, the Rev. C. D. Loose.

The death of Mrs. Edwards was not unexpected. Since Feb. 23, when she suffered a slight stroke, her condition has been acute and she had been under the constant care of two nurses and her daughter, Miss Carrie Edwards.

Death was due to neuritis and complications which were incident to advancing age which had culminated in the stroke which preceded her death.

Since February, 1934, Mrs. Edwards had been confined to her bed or chair, due to a hip injury suffered in a fall. This had left her entirely invalided. Previous to this time she had been a semi-invalid because of a serious illness, dating as far back as May of 1932.

During all the years Mrs. Edwards had been a most patient sufferer.

Always loyal to her church in all its services and its activities, she was in faithful attendance until her failing health made it impossible for her to be in her accustomed place.

She was a member of Jason D. Ferguson Woman's Relief Corps and of the Methodist Ladies' Aid and Home Missionary societies. Her interest in her church and friends continued even during her invalidism.

Mary Baker Edwards was born in Muscatine, Ia., Dec. 31, 1849. Her death occurred March 12, 1935.

She was married to John S. Edwards, Civil War veteran, in 1872 at Iowa City. With her husband, she moved to Greene county and later to Harrison county near Dunlap where her two sons and one daughter were born.

The family came to Story county inn 1893 locating upon their farm south of Nevada. In 1915 they moved into their home on H avenue, where she continued to live until her death.

Burial will be in the Nevada cemetery by the side of the husband, who passed away at the age of 92 years, July 29, 1933.

The two sons, Will and Earl, preceded their mother in death. Earl died October 21, 1918 and the elder brother just six weeks later.

Mrs. Edwards is survived by her daughter, Miss Carrie Edwards, principal of the Nevada Junior high school, who had given her devoted care during all the years, and by her grandson, Ralph Edwards.

She is also survived by her little great granddaughter, Janet Edwards and by a niece, Mrs. Amanda Edwards of Dunlap.
