PIONEER WOMAN WAS LAID TO REST

MRS. JORDAN BALLARD PASSED AWAY AT 79--LIVED IN COUNTY 74 YEARS

Mrs. Malinda Jane Stratton-Ballard, pioneer resident of Story county, for seventy-four years died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Hakes Friday August 12th, after an illness of three weeks. Death was caused by a stroke of apoplexy.

The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home. The services were in charge of Rev. N. F. Hicks of New Hartford, Iowa, a former friend and pastor of the family over thirty-three years ago.

J. S. Elmer and Harve Doggett and Arthur Ball had charge of the musical selections.

Mrs. Ballard was born in Henry county, Indiana, January 29, 1848 and died August 12thm 1927 being at the time of her death 79 years, 6 months and 10 days old.

She came to Iowa with her parents when she was five years old, settling at Ballard's Grove in Story county and she has made her home here ever since. She was married to Jordan W. Ballard, January 7th, 1872. To this union were born six children, one boy and five girls, all of whom are living and at her bedside at the time of her death. They are: J. R. Ballard of Boone, Mary Robinson of Des Moines, Emma McFarlane of Lamberton, Minn., Blanche Raimmer of Wells, Minn., Bertha Hennick of Cambridge and Stella Hakes of Nevada. Besides her children she leaves one brother Simeon Stratton of Ames, 15 grand children and 9 great grandchildren.

Her husband preceded her to that better country twenty years ago.

She was loving and tender mother and a kind neighbor and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

She was a member of the United Brethren church and a live long Christian.
