Dennis “Denny” Backous, 67, of Colo, passed away Friday, August 17, 2018, at his home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, at the Nevada Baptist Church (210 W 3rd Street) in Nevada, with Pastor Dennis Reynolds officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, August 20 also at the church. Burial with military honors will follow at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery in Nevada.

Denny was born December 24, 1950, in Des Moines the son of Irvin “Bud” and Alice Lavonne (Gluck) Backous. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1969 and following graduation enlisted in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1972. On October 6, 1973, Denny was united in marriage to LeAnn Hitchings at Hickory Grove Park in Colo.

Denny began working as an auto body technician at Ray's Auto Body in Ames and in 1977 he started Backous Body and Paint. He eventually moved the business to Nevada and renamed it Nevada Collision Center.

Denny was a member of the Nevada Baptist Church, the Colo Lions Club and served 27 years on the Colo Volunteer Fire Department. He was a volunteer for the Iowa Games from its start in 1987 until 2017, receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2016. Denny also started the Colo Soccer Club and was active with the Colo-Nesco Booster Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. Above all, Denny loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Denny is survived by his wife, LeAnn of Colo; his children: Ryan (Amanda) of Bouton, Gary (Naomi) of Nevada and Adam (Kate) of Minneapolis, MN; his grandchildren: Hayden, Aubrey, Mia, Makayla, Piper and Archie; and his brothers: Mike of Bondurant, Rod (Diane) of Des Moines and Mark of Clive. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Nevada Baptist Church.

Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements.
