OBITUARY

The last rights for Mrs. O. J. Vallem a former pioneer resident of Story and Hardin counties were held Friday afternoon at the Lutheran church in Garden City following a prayer service in the home of her son, Martin Vallem, during which Rev. H. N. Bakke of McCallsburg sang "Nu Har Jeg Vunden."

The services were in charge of the pastor, Rev. Morke, assisted by Rev. Bakke. Music was furnished at the church by congregational singing, a vocal solo by Rev. Morke and by the choir.

A talk was given by Ivan Vallem in which he paid loving tribute to his grandmother.

The pall bearers were two sons and four grandsons, George Vallem, Martin Vallem, Kenneth Vallem, Franklin Lee, Ivan Vallem, and Milford Michaelson.

The many beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Mrs. Inger Nessa and Mrs. Oleta Skie. There were also many gifts to worthy causes and missions. Burial was made in the Stavanger cemetery of Garden City by the side of the husband who passed away in 1932.

Mallin, daughter of Torness and Stephan Stephansen was born June 2, 1856 at Hugensund, Norway and passed away Wednesday, August 1, 1951, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bertha Danielson, of McCallsburg, at the age of 95 years, 1 month and 29 days.

Mrs. Vallem came to America at the age of 15 and made her home with an uncle at Leland, Ill., where on March 11, 1875, she was united in marriage to Osmund J. Vallem in the Lutheran church at Leland with Rev. O. Anderson officiating.

Mr. and Mrs. Vallem lived in Illinois a year then came to Story County and farmed and in 1883 they moved onto a farm in Hardin county near Garden City, which continued to be their home until 1914 when they moved to Northfield, Minn.

Mrs. Vallem has been in failing health for the past few years and in April came to visit her children in Iowa. Saturday she became seriously ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Danielson and continued to fail.

Mrs. Vallem was a devoted Christian mother, a member of the Lutheran church at Northwood and a member of the church aid society.

Mr. and Mrs. Vallem were the [sic] twelve children, two of whom, Otto, and an infant daughter preceeded her in death.

Most of the ten living children had been with their mother in her last few days and all were present at the funeral. They are Mrs. Rasmus Danielson (Bertha) of McCallsburg; Iver Vallem of Ellsworth; Steve Vallem of Rupert, Idaho; Regina, Mrs. Tom Auestad of Garden City; George Vallem, Zearing; Martin Vallem, Garden, Ia.; Gurine, Mrs. Willie Michaelson of Nevada, Ia.; Mrs. Alfred C. Lee, Garden City, Ia.; Mae, Mrs. Arthur E. Hickox of California; Miss Briddia Vallem of Northfield, Minn.

Surviving are two brothers, Albert Stephenson, of Chicago, Ill., and Andrew Stephenson of Story City, Ia. She also leaves 32 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
