Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Carl “Cal” Leonard Canady, 73, died peacefully at home on March 7, 2018. Cal was born January 17, 1945 to Paul Canady and Marjorie “Marni” (Reynolds) McCarty in Ames, Iowa. Four lively children were raised (Chuck, Cal, Paul, and Pam). Cal attended Gilbert High School where he excelled in basketball and track.

Cal earned a teaching degree at Iowa State University and was a loyal Cyclone fan from that point forward. He was hired at the Ames Post Office, creating a full-time career. He served the public at “the window” ~ everyone loved Cal!!! He also had the pleasure of responding to the letters of hundreds of children, representing Santa’s helper. Cal found much joy in this because of the positive impact it made on so many families. He loved being active in bowling and softball leagues~ coaching and playing. His teammates knew him as “Sixer!!"

Life evolved when he met Hope; they married in 1968 and shared a son, Corey, and a daughter, Jodi Jaye. He enjoyed being a dad and considered it his most important role. He taught financial responsibility, generosity to the less fortunate, and kindness to all people. Many memories were later made with longtime partner, Mary, and her family. Great vacations were had as a family ~ and many convertible rides in the Spitfire!!

His no-worry attitude was admired ~ it’s the Canady way.

Finally, after 35+ years of service, he embraced retirement from the Post Office. He enjoyed watching his grandkids grow and thoroughly loved praising them on their success in school and sports. He welcomed challenging crosswords, daily reading and always cheering for his beloved Cyclones.

Cal is survived by his cherished kids, Corey Canady and Jaye (Cory) Anderson; his grandkids, Cody, Colby, Zachery and Hailey; his brother, Paul (Karen) Canady; his aunt, Dorothy Reynolds; and survived by many precious extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents (including stepfather, Don McCarty); a brother, Chuck Canady; and his sister, Pam Canady.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 7 at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Cards can be mailed to 1215 Edgebrook Drive, Story City, IA 50248.
