Ursula Ann Smith was born in Warsaw, Poland on February 4, 1922. She grew up in Katowice, Poland. She was educated in Poland, Switzerland, England, France and the United States. She married Fred Smith in Madison, Wisconsin in 1943.

Ursula worked as a nurse, a laboratory technician and a teacher. She taught French at Iowa State University for nearly 30 years. After retirement she volunteered for many worthy causes, he Ames Public Library, Mary Greeley Hospital, the Salvation Army, the food pantry, Worldly Goods and other organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Frederick Smith, and her only daughter Christine. She is survived her 2 grandsons, Geoffrey and Jonathon Schroeder.

Ursula was known for her love of animals and provided a happy home to many cats and dogs. She lived a long, interesting and useful life before her death on February 20, 2018 in Ames, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas Church on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
