Benjamin Eric Nelson was born September 18, 1988 to J.L. and Ann (Simmons) Nelson in Ames, Iowa. He attended school in Ames and graduated from Ames High School in 2006. He attended Iowa State University for two years and in 2008 moved to Denver, Colorado where he managed Anthony’s Pizza and Pasta. He moved back home in 2012 to be closer to his family.
He was a loving and caring brother to Andrew and Jess, and developed a close relationship to his sister-in-law, Sarah. Ben could fill any room with laughter and will forever be remembered by those who knew him as a loving person who gave the best bear hugs.
He found joy in watching baseball, spending time with dogs, was a passionate movie buff, and a proficient writer. Ben also was an avid Denver Broncos fan. In high school, Ben excelled in Quiz Bowl and participated in trivia games throughout his life. He enjoyed playing video games with his brother and friends, especially Super Smash Brothers.
Ben passed away at 29 years of age on January 17, 2018, surrounded by loved ones, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Ben is survived by his parents, J.L. and Ann Nelson of Ames; his brothers, Andrew (Sarah) Nelson of St. Paul, Minn. and Jess Nelson of Ames; his grandmother Patricia Simmons, of Waterloo; his aunts and uncles, Kurt (Teisha Hartle) Nelson of Des Moines, Eric (Leslie Kessler) Nelson of Seattle, Wash., LiAnn Nelson of Ocean Shores, Wash., Sue (Blake) Hanke of Clive, and Bernard (Juliana) Simmons of Woodbury, Minn.; and his cousins, Molly Brougham of Tokyo, Japan, Katherine Simmons of Greensboro, N.C. and Colin (Eneline) Simmons of Norwalk, Conn.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jerry and Bonnie Nelson and Barney Simmons.
