Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Mary (Rasmussen) Smith 90, of Ames passed peacefully on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Northridge Village in Ames, Iowa. Born on May 9,1927 to George and Rose Rasmussen, Mary spent most of her adult life living on 16th Street in Ames. After graduating from Ames High School, she worked at the ISU Library for a short time before marrying Kenneth W. Smith on April 11,1948. Together, they had three daughters, Linda, Nancy, and Cindy.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ken, her daughter, Nancy Woldruff , her sisters , Florence and Mildred, and her brother, Jim.

Mary is survived by two brothers, Pete and John Rasmussen, as well as two sisters, Georgia Capellen and Agnes Lawson. Also surviving her are two daughters, Linda (Darrell) DeGeus of Woodbury, MN, Cindy (Tim) Teig of Atlantic, IA and son in law, Scott Woldruff of Elkhart, IN. In addition, she had seven beloved grandchildren, Laurie Ambrose, Lisa Amundson, David DeGeus, Lindsay Louzon, Angie Hahn, Sara Zigich, Kris Teig and eight great grandchildren. Also grieving her loss is her loving companion of many years, Avon Hall of Ames.

Much beloved by her family, Mary was a hard-working wife, mother, and grandmother. She was known by family members for her special homemade pies, filled with apples from her backyard tree. Husband Ken would pick the apples then lay them on the kitchen counter to signal that it was pie baking time. For many years, their home was the center of all of the family Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Mary would be in the kitchen early in the morning, filling the house with the delicious smell of roasting turkey, ham, or her special Christmas cookies. She enjoyed playing card games at the kitchen table with her grandkids and telling them fun stories from her younger days.

Services for Mary will be at Adams Funeral Home in Ames on Friday, January 26 at 11:00am. A visitation time will precede the funeral from 10-11:00 am. The service will be followed by burial beside her husband, Ken, and daughter, Nancy, at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
