John Taylor Lavery
November 4, 1972 - January 18, 2018

John Lavery, 45, died after an accident on the production line January 18, 2018 about five months after he began working at the company’s 13th Street plant.

John was born November 4th 1972 in the Philippines to an Air Force family, Larry and Alicia (Bucurio) Lavery. John moved to the U.S. at age five. He met his wife, Juanita, when he was just about to turn 21, and the couple married about a year later on July, 23 1994 in San Bernadino, CA at the Trinity Christian Church.

John enlisted in the U.S. Army 18 months after he and Juanita had their first daughter, Chelsie and spent much of their lives on military bases, from Georgia to Germany to Washington state to California to Hawaii and finally Louisiana. Juanita said he served four combat tours, two in Iraq after 9/11 and two in Afghanistan, and later worked as a recruiter. He retired as a sergeant first class after 20 years.

John was preparing to enjoy his future outside of military life. He planned to learn how to bow hunt with his son-in-law later this year and wanted to spend time at the shooting range with his new gun, and he and Juanita were planning on buying a house later this year. He enjoyed Fishing, Golfing, Bowling and Playing pool. John was a member of Harvest Assembly of God Church in Huxley and American Legion Post #37 in Ames. John was enjoying his work, making friends and laying down roots in the community.

John’s family described him as a generous soul who went out of his way to ensure others were better off. He was known to counsel his troops on tour, and invite them to his home for the holidays. He also invited Danfoss’ student workers and interns over for the holidays if they couldn’t go home to their own families.

The Laverys are contacting military cemeteries in California in accordance with John’s wish to be buried there. Juanita said John’s military friends, soldiers and former commanders from across the world have sent their condolences to the family.

John is survived by his parents of San Bernardino, CA; wife, Juanita of Ames; two daughters, Chelsie (Jacob) Gohlmann of Ames, Allison Lavery of Ames; three grandchildren, Makenna, Jacob Gohlmann, Payton Lavery; one brother, Christopher Lavery of Tonopah, Nevada and his grandma Bacurio of the Phillipines.
