Evelyn M. Smith, age 88, of Nevada, Iowa, died Monday, November 20, 2017, at Rolling Green Village in Nevada.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2017, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada, with Fr. Rick Dagit officiating. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Nevada. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 5-7 p.m.

Born February 3, 1929, south of Nevada, Evelyn Marie Smith was the daughter of James and Marguerite (Heintz) Fitzgerald. She attended school in Garden Grove and Nevada, graduating from Nevada High School.

On October 16, 1957, Evelyn was united in marriage to Richard Dean Smith in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple made their home in Sioux City for several years, then returned to Nevada where they raised their six children and lived the remainder of their lives.

Evelyn was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada. She was an excellent baker and each Christmas shared her delicious homemade cinnamon rolls with family and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards and embroidery, as well as the company of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her wonderful sense of humor will long be remembered.

Survivors include six children, William (Marilyn) Fulkerson of Ankeny, Stephen (Marla) Fulkerson of Prior Lake, MN, Kathy (John) Koebel of Sioux City, Charles (Sheila) Smith of Nevada, Sue (Mike) Sarnecki of West Des Moines, Cher (Bill) McBride of Nevada; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Richard in 1996; her parents; and two brothers, Don and Bob Fitzgerald.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Evelyn and her family.
