Obituary for Joseph "Joe" Birchmier

Joseph John Birchmier, 94 of Maxwell, died Friday, September 15, 2017, at Courtyard Estates in Bondurant.

Joe was born December 11, 1922, on the family farm northeast of Maxwell the son of Albert and Francis (Backoff) Birchmier. From the time he was small he and his brother Albert Lee played and worked on the farm with their dad. Joe graduated from Maxwell High School in 1942 and served two years in the United States Army in France and Germany during WWII. On October 16, 1948, Joe was united in marriage to Bonnie Clement at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada. Together they raised five children.

Joe enjoyed living in the country and working the ground. His garden and his peach trees were his pride and joy. Family was very importa nt to him and Sundays were always spent with Grandpa and Grandma Clement in Des Moines for the day, and evenings with Grandpa and Grandma Birchmier for homemade ice cream and desserts and visiting with other relatives. Joe enjoyed spending 14 winters in Mission, Texas and watching his children show their 4-H projects.

Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colo, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #249 and the Story County Cattleman’s Association. He had also been active with the Phillips Community Club and served as a 4-H leader and on the Maxwell School Board.

Joe is survived by his wife Bonnie of Bondurant; his son, Stephen (Jeanie) Birchmier of Maxwell; his daughters: Catherine (Gary) Tichenor of Nevada, Teresa (Ted) Stoneberg of Arcadia, WI, Mary Beth (Rod) Maxwell of Maxwell and Diana (Michael) Holl of Nevada; his brothers: James (Mary Ida) Birchmier of Collins, Lawrence (Ginie) Birchmier of Mitchellville; 11 grandchildren: Bill Stoneberg, Shain (Kelley) Birchmier, Jason (Kerri) Maxwell, Tami (Mike) Hohmann, Shawna (Nate) Forsyth, Joe (Lynn) Stoneberg, Alisa Maxwell and fiancé Robert Woodward, Erin (Joe) Mousel, Justin Holl, John (Abby) Maxwell and Nate Holl; along with 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Albert Lee Birchmier, sister-in-law, Carol Birchmier; and a son-in-law, Richard Applegate; brother-in-law, Ted Clement and sister-in-law, Lila Clement.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, September 19 at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 20, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colo with Father Rick Dagit officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Colo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post #249, St. James Cemetery Association or Hospice of the Midwest in Johnston.

Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell is handling arrangements.
