Rowena J. Hurlbut was born May 20, 1917 to Arthur C. and Ethel R. Bennett on a farm in Hamilton County, Iowa. She graduated from Livermore High School, attended Morningside College, and graduated from Tobin Business College. She married Walter C. Hurlbut on June 10, 1939 in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Rowena owned and managed Hallmark Gift Shops in Ames, Boone, Clive, Des Moines, Jefferson and Waterloo for over 50 years, traveling weekly to each location, finally retiring at age 88.

She was a past member of Altrusa International, Ames Golf & Country Club, Ames Women's Club, Delta Zeta Sorority, Order of the Eastern Star, and various Chambers of Commerce in Iowa. In 1980, she was named "Business Woman of the Year" by the Ames Chamber of Commerce. When her children were young she served as Den Mother Trainer for Story County and as a Camp Fire Leader.

With her busy work schedule Rowena still found time to enjoy bowling, bridge, golf, piano, reading, and scherenschnitte. She loved to travel and was fortunate to have enjoyed trips to over 18 foreign countries. For the past 20+ years she resided at Northcrest Community where she participated in many activities, and especially enjoyed the time there with her many friends.

Rowena passed away peacefully on June 10, 2017 at Northcrest Community Health Care Center in Ames, surrounded by her family.

Rowena is survived by two sons, Terrill C. Hurlbut of Florida and Gary D. Hurlbut of Ames; her daughter, Cherie K. Hurlbut of Florida; her granddaughter, Christina Tippmann of Washington D.C.; her grandson, Dr. TJ and wife Dr. Kathleeya Veldhouse and their children, Talia and Mikayla of New Zealand; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; and four brothers.
