Charles Edward (Ed) Seaman passed away peacefully June 9, 2017 at Green Hills Retirement Community in Ames, Iowa.
Ed was born July 21, 1923 in Piedmont, West Virginia, a paper-mill town on the Potomac River. He grew up in Piedmont with his father Harley Clifford and mother Naomi Ruth. After graduating from Piedmont High School, Ed served 4 years as a U.S. Army medic in World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He was among the first medics sent to Hiroshima following the bombing.
After the war, Ed attended Potomac State College and graduated with a degree in education from Shepherd College in 1949. He was proud to begin teaching at the first integrated high school in his home county in the 1950s.
While serving as organist and choir director of his church, he was introduced to Patsy Ruth Francis. They were married June 19, 1954, and their 63 years of marriage were full of joy, compassion, and laughter.
Ed obtained a Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959 and relocated to New Jersey. He helped start the Science department at Randolph High School and then taught biology at Morristown and Madison high schools until retirement in 1985. He was a beloved teacher for his energy and passion, as well as his unique catchphrases in the classroom. He and Pat raised their three children in Randolph, NJ, and enjoyed many summers camping at the Jersey shore with family and friends.
Ed was a Mason, a member of the Lions Club and the Dover (NJ) Methodist Church, and he spent many summers as the waterfront director with the YMCA Camp Morris. After retirement, Ed and Pat moved to Columbia, Mo., where they were very active at Fairview United Methodist Church, the Retired Teachers Association, the Boone County Fair and the Show-Me State Games. They moved to Iowa in 2012 to be near their children.
Throughout his life, Ed was known by his indomitable spirit and faith, his devotion to Pat and family, and his passion for music. He will be greatly missed.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Pat, children Charles (Renee) Seaman, Ruth (Ted) MacDonald, and David Seaman, grandchildren Michael (Emilie) Seaman, Merike Seaman, Neal (Clare) MacDonald, and Scott MacDonald, and great-grandchild Asher Charles Seaman. He will be interred at Philos Cemetery in Westernport, Maryland.
