Edna was born April 24, 1919 in Brayton, IA to William and Mabel (Salveson) Nelson. She graduated from Exira High School in 1936 and started teaching in a one-room school. She moved to Des Moines to continue her studies at Capital City Commercial College receiving her Secretarial Degree on November 2, 1940. Edna started working for National Screen Service, an advertising firm for motion pictures. During this time she met the love of her life, Arlo Heggen.

On October 26, 1941, Arlo and Edna were married at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church. The attack on Pearl Harbor in December changed their plans and Arlo began serving in the United States Coast Guard in California. Edna joined Arlo in California and worked at Moore Dry Dock. After the war, Edna and Arlo returned to Iowa to farm and raised four children. When most people would think of retiring, Edna started her career as a home health aide with Mary Greeley Medical Center and worked there for 17 years.

Edna enjoyed traveling with her family and spent many hours doing needle work and baking for those she loved.

She is survived by: daughters Judith Koplin of Ames, IA and Kathleen (Kim) Hovey of Minnetonka, MN, daughter in law Betty Heggen of Sunny Isles, FL, sister Olive Ferguson, sister in law Lucille Nelson, grandchildren Keith Sambos, Eileen Sambos, Cherilyn Heggen, Christopher (Julia) Heggen, Jed Hovey, Adriann (Jason) Mootz, five great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arlo Murray Heggen, sons Richard and Arthur Heggen, brother John Nelson, brother in law Charles Ferguson and niece Jo Ellen (Ferguson) Hall.
