OBITUARY

Death of Mrs. James Guge

Julia Ann Dayton* [sic] was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, March 16, 1847, and died in Iowa Center, Iowa, September 28, 1907, aged 60, 6 months, 7 days. She was married to James V. Guge, August 16, 1868. To this union were born one son Joshua Ephraim of Theif [sic] River Falls, Minnesota, and four daughters, Mrs. Jennie Mitchell of Polk county, Iowa, Mrs. Josephine Fry of Iowa Center, Mrs Jennette Johnson of Anton, Minnesota, and Mrs. Hattie Graves of Des Moines, all of whom with the aged husband mourn her loss. She leaves beside these, seven grand children and two sisters, Mrs. Frances Buid and Mrs. Malinda Buck of Kansas; also five brothers, Willis, Asbery, Joseph, Anthony, of Kansas and David of Carroll county, Iowa. She joined the Advent church in the year 1869 in Indiana and died in the faith in which she lived. She was taken ill about the middle of July and has been a patient sufferer ever since. The last time she was away from home was July 4th where she spent the day with a niece Mrs. C. F. Smith* of this place. She rallied a short while after her first illness and was able to be up and abound home, but on Wednesday morning was taken very suddenly ill and was never able to be up again. Death brought a shock to the family although they expected it any time. Owing to the fact that they could get no telegraph service, none but two daughters were able to be with her during her illness or after death.

Mr. and Mrs. Guge came to Iowa August 1873 and have since resided in or near Iowa Center, leaving a host of friends who sympathize with the family in their bereavement.

The funeral was held at the home Monday afternoon at which the Christian church pastor of Maxwell gave a short interesting discourse. Interment was made in Woodland Cemetery.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: The deceased is Julia Ann Layton, not Dayton as stated. "Mrs. C. F. Smith" was Isabella Ann Guge, daughter of William H. Guge (half brother of James V. Guge) and Eliza Layton (sister of Julia Layton Guge) and therefore a niece of both Mr. and Mrs. James V. Guge.
