Edward Neil Holthaus
December 10, 1931 - April 27, 2017Edward N. Holthaus went home to be with his savior on Thursday, April 27, 2017. He passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a three -week stay at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 3rd at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ames, at 10:00 am. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran on Tuesday evening, May 2.
Ed was born December 10, 1931, in Ryan, Iowa, to Wesley and Ella (Koenecke) Holthaus. He attended school in Ryan until the family moved to LeMars, where he graduated high school in 1949. He was baptized March 27, 1932, in Colesburg, Iowa; and confirmed at First Lutheran Church, San Diego, April 11, 1954. He attended Westmar College for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1950. He was stationed in San Diego and after several deployments to Korea was honorably discharged in 1954.
In 1952 he met his future bride, Irene Senne, on a blind date in Northwood, Iowa. They were married Jan. 3, 1953 and recently celebrated 64 years of marriage.
Ed embodied the American entrepreneurial spirit. After attending barber college in Des Moines, he and Irene moved to Ames. He operated Ed's Barber Shop in Campus Town for seven years. He then began selling real estate in 1961, helping to open the successful firm, REI (Real Estate Incorporated). Other endeavors include a partnership in a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise with multiple restaurants, and a real estate abstract firm in Ames. In 1973 he started Holthaus and Associates, representing manufacturing firms in the Midwest with Irene working alongside him in the office, the business continues today.
Ed and Irene retired in 1990 and they were able to spend 21 winters back in San Diego golfing and enjoying life together where their journey began.
He is survived by his loving wife, Irene; four daughters Kathy (Gary) Smith, Sandy (Craig) Benson, Cheryl (Kelly) Milligan, and Karen Philips; 9 grandchildren, Sarah (Matt) Craft, Ryan (Kim) Smith, Lindsay (Jon) Gallo, Karissa (Jason) Lucas , Clayton (Helene) Benson, Toni (Ross) Primack, Kristi ( Andy) Wass , Jacob ( Danielle ) Philips, and Benjamin Philips; 9 great granddaughters, many nieces and nephews; and brother Frank Holthaus of Detroit.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wesley; mother, Ella; and brother, Clark.
Ed was known for being quick with a joke and a story; and is remembered for his unending love for the Lord. His humor entertained us until his final days. He always said that he was surrounded by women and loved every minute. We find comfort knowing that the love of Jesus now surrounds him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association or St. Paul Lutheran Church. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses who provided excellent care for him and support for his family.
