Larry V. Anderson was born June 24, 1938 to Orville and Ardyce (Vold) Anderson in rural Hamilton County, Iowa. After graduating from Roland High School, Larry attended Waldorf College where he sang in the Waldorf Choir and later graduated from Drake University. He married Karen Ackerlund May 26, 1963 at Garden Prairie United Church of Christ in rural Madrid. Larry was a charter member of Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church in Huxley.
Larry was active in 4-H serving as leader of the Palestine Peppy Pushers 4-H Club for many years. Under his leadership the club members, with support from parents, raised money to build the outdoor amphitheater in Huxley's Railroad Park. Larry served on the Story County 4-H Foundation Board and was inducted into the Iowa State Fair 4-H Hall of Fame.
Larry worked in the savings and loan business in Des Moines, first at Polk County Federal and then nearly 20 years at American Federal. He was active in the Institute of Financial Education serving as president of the local chapter then as a Regional and National Director of the Institute. He belonged to the Downtown Des Moines Kiwanis Club where he served as their president in 1982/1983. Larry also served on the Bethany Life Communities Board of Directors from 2001 to 2006.
His hobbies included slalom water skiing, snow skiing with his family in Colorado, attending Iowa football games, and in later years, he enjoyed fishing with friends. Prior to being diagnosed with interstitial lung disease in 2015, he raised sheep and each summer baled a lot of hay. Family and music was very important to him. He was a member of Ballard Community Band for many years. Larry often hosted family reunions at the home acreage.
Larry is survived by his wife, Karen Anderson of Huxley; his sons, Chad Anderson of Huxley, Mark Anderson of Hanoi, Viet Nam and Scott Anderson of Missoula, Mont.; three siblings, Joyce Ryan of Ft. Dodge, Nancy Eischen of Ames and Paul Anderson of Zearing; and his very special sister-in-law, Barb Anderson of Norwalk.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Roger Anderson; his brother-in-law, Dr. Bill Ryan; and one nephew, Greg Ryan.
