OBITUARY

SAD DEATH OF MRS. APPLE

Mrs. Albert Apple who lived about eight miles northeast of Nevada came to town Thursday morning to have some dentistry work done and called upon Dr. Arthur for that purpose. The nature of the work and amount necessitated that she be given an anesthetic in order to reduce the pain. Accordingly Dr. Smith was called and chloroform was administered. The patient showed no alarming signs when taking the chloroform and everything was believed to be going nicely when she suddenly collapsed. Drs. Arthur, Smith and Bailey all worked over her for more than an hour to no avail and finally at nearly noon they pronounced her dead. The corpse was taken to the Hammond undertaking rooms at noon. Deceased was an elderly lady and when examined before administering the chloroform she was found to be in good health and her heart strong. Dr. Arthur has had nine years experience in his profession and Dr. Smith has had over twenty in his but neither ever lost a patient from chloroform before. Death was evidently due to paralysis of the heart caused by the anaesthetic.

Mrs. Margaret Apple was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Smay and belonged to a family long known and highly esteemed in the county. Her father died a number of years ago but her mother and sister Miss Olivia reside in Colo. She was fifty years of age in May last, and had lived for the most of her life in the vicinity of Johnson's Grove. She leaves her husband, a daughter of twenty years and a son of fifteen and besides her mother and the sister already mentioned she leaves also a sister, Mrs. Wm. Mead of Johnson's Grove, her brother Chas. Smay on the old homestead in the same neighborhood and her other brother, Rev. Wesley Smay of Ottawa, Kansas. Mrs. Apple was a most estimable woman and was highly regarded throughout the neighborhood in which she had spent her life. Her tragic death causes the greatest grief among her family, kinspeople and friends.

The funeral will be conducted Saturday forenoon from the Methodist church at Johnson's Grove.
