The Humphrey brothers, publishers of the Watchman were called away this week to attend the funeral of their father who died in Des Moines and was buried in the family lot in Newton. On account of his death the Watchman will be issued this week a day later. Benjamin Humphrey was born in Athens county, Ohio, October 2nd 1843 and died at his home 3163 Sixth avenue, Des Moines, July 2nd, 1906. He went to Newton in 1866 after being discharged from the army and made his home there for many years thus accounting for his burial at that place. In the army he was a member of Company G of the 63nd Ohio volunteers and served three years and ten months. A niece Jennie Clifton of Grinnell, did not arrive in time for the funeral owing to poor telephone service. She arrived in Newton on the train the party left for Des Moines on.
