From Fredergill Family Funeral Home obituary, Collins and Zearing, Story County, Iowa:

Mildred Fay Helland, formerly of McCallsburg, died of heart failure Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at Zearing Health Care Center in Zearing, where she had lived for the past six and a half years. She was 93.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 20, at Bethany Lutheran. Burial will follow at Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg.

Millie was born March 5, 1924, in Ohio, Ill., to John Ayers and Elizabeth McBride Ayers. She was the youngest of five children. She attended school at Rutland and Ohio, Ill. After graduating from high school in 1942, she joined the Navy WAVES and was stationed in Washington, D.C., after training in New York City. It was in New York that Millie met her future husband, Delmar Helland of McCallsburg, who was in the Air Force at the time. They married in 1946 in Roland and settled in McCallsburg. Millie tended their home and family in McCallsburg and later on a farm just outside of town.

She is survived by her children, Ann (Greg) Ruble of Waukee, Lorijo Lounsberry of Story City and Kurt Helland of Des Moines (girlfriend Jody Horning); her grandchildren, Nathan (Holly) Ruble and Brian, Kevin and Lynn Lounsberry; and her great-grandchildren, Georgia and Rider Ruble. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her three sisters and brother, an infant daughter, an infant grandson and son-in-law John Lounsberry.

There was always a song on Millie’s lips, even if the lyrics were simply “Ya ta-da ta-da ta-da.” She lived for family gatherings and for making sure everybody was fed.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Zearing Health Care Center, 404 E. Garfield St., Zearing, IA 50278, or to McCallsburg Betterment, P.O. Box 75, McCallsburg, IA 50154.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fredregill Funeral Home of Zearing.
