From Nevada Representative October 23, 1908

The funeral of Capt. I. L. Smith was conducted from the house Wednesday afternoon in presence of a large assemblage of sorrowing friends. The services were in charge of Rev. R. E. Shaw and were suitable to the occasion and the memory of a man of very exceptional worth and character. Besides all the members of the immediate family there were present friends from many parts of the county, and among those from outside the county were noted: Judge Stevens and T. L. Ashford of Boone and Ole O. Roe of Des Moines. Capt. Smith's only surviving brother, John Henry Smith of Bloomington, Illinois, was not able to be present. The interment was with Masonic rites in the Nevada cemetery. Of the members of the family John Henry Smith left the same evening for Kansas City, M. L. Smith and family returned to Ames, and Will Smith and family leave this noon for Chicago. Chas. E. Smith and his three daughters will probably leave Saturday evening for their home in Kansas City, where Miss Naomi will for the time-being be house-keeper and the two younger girls are in school. Mrs. Chas. E. will remain here with Mrs. Smith senior for a time. For the present it is the plan of Mrs. Smith senior to maintain the home here, although it is possible that later she will join the boys at Kansas City.
