OBITUARY

DEATH OF MRS. HOWLAND

Mrs. Amelia Howland, widow of T. B. Howland, died about two o'clock this morning at the family home near Pleasant Grove in Milford township after a protracted illness. Mrs. Howland had been suffering very severely at times from appendicitis; but she declined to take the chances of an operation, and her progress toward recovery had been very intermittent and uncertain. There have been some previous times in her illness when her recovery was regarded as very doubtful, and her death though an occasion for great sorrow throughout a wide circle of friends, will not cause great surprise.

Mrs. Howland was a native of New York state, and her maiden name was Jagers. She was born December 5, 1850 and died October 26, 1908, aged 57 years, 10 months and 20 days. She grew up and married in the east and she and Mr. Howland came to Story county as young married people about or very soon after 1870 and became virtual pioneers of Milford township. The family have has continued there ever since, and it was there that Mr. Howland died in 1888, as Mrs. Howland has now done twenty years later. They lost one child in infancy, and the three children that have grown up are Mrs. Chas. Apple and Mrs. Ira Crooks, both of Nevada, and the son Baldus, who has continued to live with his mother on the home farm. Mr. Howland was a representative citizen of Milford township, and Mrs. Howland was a woman of force and character, much esteemed in the neighborhood where she lived and in Nevada where the family had their trading point in the earlier years and where in recent years she had been much at the homes of her daughters.

The funeral will be held at the home in Milford township on Tuesday afternoon at one-thirty o'clock by Rev. A. M. Elliott of Ames, and the interment will be in the Nevada cemetery.
