OBITUARY
PIONEER MINISTER GONE
Rev. S. H. Mitchell, familiarly known as Father Mitchell who has long been feeble at his home in Ames passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 7; and his funeral will be held at 2:30 next Sunday in the Baptist church at Ames. His age was nearly 81.
He was a native of Indiana, came to Iowa in 1855 and engaged in school work at Oskaloosa, one of his pupils being Major S. H. M. Beyers of Des Moines. During the sixties he as a Baptist pioneer missionary traveled over the new state, organizing churches and Sunday schools and assisting those already organized experiencing the hardships of that period. In 1869 he located at Ames and during the seven years of his pastorate there the First Baptist church building was erected. He held several other pastorates one of which was at Nevada and one of the latest was in Indian Territory. Advanced age and waning strength brought him back to Ames, where his last years have passed beautifully in the light of Christian faith and amid the tender ministrations of his estimable wife and their posterity. Their children are Mesdames Albert Lucas and K. W. Brown and Miss Cassie Mitchell of Ames and Mrs. Minnie Maxon whose home is in a distant state.
Mr. Mitchell was of sterling worth, truly beloved and esteemed, and has made better the multitude of lives he has touched.
He was the author of "Historical sketches of Iowa Bapstists" and of "Life of Ex-chief Jonney cake of Delaware Indians."
