SHEFFIELD — Emma Smith, 77, of Sheffield, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at the chapel at the Story County Hospital Long-Term Care Unit in Nevada, Iowa, with the Rev. Ken Livingston of First Grace Baptist Church, Sheffield, presiding. Interment will be at Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Emma May Smith was born May 16, 1935, in New Albany Township, Story County, Iowa, a daughter of Henry Samuel and Ethel Ione (Troup) Wax. She graduated from high school with the class of 1953 at Maxwell.

On Aug. 15, 1953, Emma was united in marriage with William Earl Smith Sr. Emma was a devoted mother and homemaker. She volunteered with many community organizations, including sponsoring Peace Corps couples, helping to organize the Mid Iowa Community Action Agency and worked with the PEERS Program for Heartland Services until she was 70 years of age.

Emma enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning and spending time with her family, and she always welcomed friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: John (Margita) Smith, Lake Elsinore, California; Kaye (Charlie) Henry, Topeka, Kan.; Bill Smith, Dumont; Earnie (Pam) Smith, Nevada; Penny (Terry) McCaslin, Sheffield; Henry (Diane) Smith, Osage; 11 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sisters: Wilma Oxley & Adeline Bishop and brother-in-law Don Vancise all of Nevada and 13 Nieces and Nephews.
