ROLAND ROCKETS

Death of Michael Erickson

Again it becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of one of our early settlers, Mike Erickson, who died at his home in Roland Tuesday evening after a severe sickness of nineteen weeks. As noted in the pioneer list, he came to Story county from Illinois in 1858 and had made this his continuous home ever since. For most part of this time, he resided on his farm just north of town, and was noted as one of the most successful farmers and stock raisers in this locality. After retiring from the farm, he conducted a lumber trade for a while, eventually selling out to Hegland and & Michaelson. After this he practically retired and moved to town locating in Erickson's addition in east Roland. At the time of his death, his possession were quite extensive. Aside from the large farm, and other property in Roland, he owned land in Dakota and was an extensive share-builder in the Farmers Savings Bank of this place. It will be thus seen that his life had been an active one, and let it be known that everything owned by Mike Erickson caem by honest toil and just dealing with his fellow man. We think we can truthfully say that we have received more helpful advice from Mike Erickson than from any other one individual. He was a man of few words, said what he thought, and thought what he said, hewed to the line, let the chips fall where they may. He donated to the city the land that now constitutes Erickson Park. he was a life-long member of Bergens church to which he donated most liberally. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon. He leaves a wife, two sons, and tow daughters namely Mrs. Ole Hanson, Mrs James Larson, Olaf and Jacob. Olaf who resides in New Mexico, came home a while ago to assist in caring for his father.
