OBITUARY

Death of Mrs. Patrick Carmody

Mrs. Mary Carmody, widow of the late Patrick Carmody, died Tuesday noon at the home east of Nevada of her daughter, Mrs. John Maroney, after an illness of a few days with pneumonia and heart trouble. Mr. Carmody died at the same place on November 1 of last year, and Mrs. Carmody therefore follows her husband after a widowhood of only a little over two months.

Mary (Maroney) Carmody was born at Ennestymon, County Clare, Ireland on December 16, 1838, and died as stated near Nevada, Iowa, January 4, 1910, aged 71 years and 19 days. She was married in Ireland to Patrick Carmody in 1860, and they emigrated to the United States in 1863, locating first in New York, then in Pennsylvania, moving later to Illinois and finally to Iowa in 1883. In the last named year they settled in the northwestern part of Sherman township, where the family homestead has since been and where sons of the children still reside. About ten years ago they quit the farm and moved to Nevada, where they continued to live until last March, when chiefly on account of Mr. Carmody, who was about 86 years of age, they went to live with their daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. John Maroney of Nevada township. Mr. and Mrs. Carmody had eleven children, of whom five sons and two daughters survive. These are Mrs. John Maroney, Charles and Stephen Carmody of this county; Mrs. George M. Walker of Denver, Colorado; Patrick Carmody Jr. of Alberta, Canada; and John and Michael Carmody in this state. There were with Mrs. Carmody at the time of her death four of the sons and one daughter, the other two children, Mrs. Walker, with her husband, and Patrick, arriving later.

The funeral was conducted this forenoon from St. Patrick's church, Father Nichols officiating.
