Ellen Josephine Dix, daughter of Johnnie and Georgia (Coenen) Newman, was born July 13, 1930 in Eddy County, North Dakota. She received her education in North Dakota, graduating from Lake Washington High School.

Following graduation, Ellen worked on area farms in North Dakota, where she met her future husband, Arthur Dix. On June 1, 1949, Ellen and Art were united in marriage in Cando, North Dakota. After living a short time in North Dakota, they moved to Emmetsburg. Ellen and Art were blessed with a son and a daughter.

Ellen was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Each summer Ellen had a large garden, which she enjoyed caring for. She also enjoyed fishing, working puzzles and reading. She liked listening to country music and watching sports, especially baseball and Iowa State basketball. Ellen loved traveling and visiting new places.

Ellen was always there to help others, especially her family. After Arthur’s death, Ellen had her mother move in with her so that she could care for her. After her mother’s death in 2002, Ellen moved to Ames to live closer to her son, Larry and his family.

Ellen was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg and while living in Ames she attended Memorial Lutheran Church.

Ellen passed away Friday, October 14, 2016 at her home in Ames, Iowa at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie Newman and Georgia Newman-Howard; her husband, Arthur Dix; her daughter, Lucille Callaghan; her twin sister, Helen Mulder; and her brother, Albert Newman.

She is survived by her son, Larry Dix and his wife, Bonnie of Ames, Iowa; two grandchildren, Ethan Dix and his wife, Angela of West Des Moines, Iowa and Elisa Dix of Ames, Iowa; two great grandchildren, Audrey and Sabrina Dix; a sister, Arlene Peterson and her husband, Burdette of Little Canada, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Kay Newman of Blair, Nebraska; nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.
