From the Roland Record, Thursday, January 9, 1919.

Elza J. Humphrey, formerly of Carlisle, but who has been making his home here with his son, A. E. Humphrey, passed away on the 23d day of December, 1918, at the ripe old age of eighty years, three months and sixteen days.

The deceased was born in Ohio, September 7, 1838, and when a young man came to Iowa. At the outbreak of the Civil war, he enlisted in Co. E, 40th Iowa Inf., serving his country faithfully for a period of three years.

On the 7th day of November, 1865, he was united in marriage to Miss Frances Eastman. To this union four children were born: Charles E. who died in infancy, Mrs. Jennie Berteh, Portal, N. D., George T. Humphrey of Des Moines, and Alonzo E. Humphrey of Roland, at whose home he died, having made his home with his son since the death of his wife, Mrs. Humphrey, whose death occurred on the 7th day of December, 1914.

Funeral services were held in the home in Roland, and the remains were taken to Carlisle, where interment was made. The I.O.O.F. Lodge had charge of the funeral services. Mr. Humphrey was a member of this organization.

Another name has been stricken from the ever lessening roll of our old settlers, and staunch supporters of the preservation of the Union during the turbulent time in the early sixties.
