ROLAND ROCKETSObituary of Erick R. Sheldahl.
E. R. Sheldal died at his home here in Roland last Friday Oct. 16, after a lingering illness of many months. His sickness dates back to a time whenhe was seriously hurt in a runaway while bisiting his son Louis up in North Dakota. From that injury he never recovered fully though after a time he was able to be up and around. Following this he suffered from paralysis and for the past year or more was confined to the bed most of the time. He was born in Norway on Dec. 8, 1831, and came to America in 1847, locating at Lisbon, Ill., where he resided until 1856 when he came to Story county locating on a farm just south of where Roland is now situated. He was married to Betsy Ness, Oct. 12 1855. Of this union there were born fourteen children nine of whom are living, namely Mrs. Severson, Mrs. J. F. Burritts, Mrs. Osmond Egland, Mrs. G. H. Krohn, Miss Martha ans sons Henry, Russell, Oscar and Louis all being present at the funeral which was held on Monday Oct. 19, conducted by Rev. Snadven of Roland and Rev. Paulsruds of Randall. In the death of E. R. Sheldal the county loses one of its earliest pioneers and Howard on of its first settlers. In the settling of this part of the county E. R. Sheldal acted an umnportant part. He took more than a passing interest in public matters and was especially interested in matters political of county, state and nation. It was th writer's good fortune to spend his first night in this part of the state at the house of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Sheldal and the friendship and acquaintances then formed was never broken. He was man not given to complain but could always see good where most of us would despair. He was of the hopeful kind and a saying of his was, "It might be worse." He did right because he believed in right. Just because with him justice was principle. He remarked to the writer once in this way "a man should be rated according to his actual deeds and character and not according to his reputation." The children of Mr. and Mrs. Sheldal have grown up and so honor to the name of their parents. He was devoted member of Salem church and was living example of a faithful christian. The funeral was largely attended friends and relatives from an distance being in attendance. We shall miss E. R. Sheldal his friendly greeting and good cheer.
