OBITUARY

MRS. ABEL OLSON

The death of Mrs. Abel Olson last week marks the passing another of the early settlers of the north part of the county. Abel Olson her husband died at the old homestead near Roland a few years ago, and for a time Mrs. Olson remained on the farm eventually moving to Roland and having purchased the property just west of Bergens church. It was bout fifty-four years ago when Mr. and Mrs. Abel Olson settled in Howard township, at which time settlers were few and the tasks of opening up and developing a new country was one fraught with many difficulties. But force energy and determination were the qualities of which these early settlers were possessed and to them in sense the task was a pleasure.

It is fitting to mention here the names of those that took an active part with Mr. and Mrs. Olson in making the township one of the noted agricultural districts of the state, in fact a few of those were here before the coming of Mr. and Mrs. Olson. Among this number were R. W. Ballard, Jonas Duea, Harry Boyes, E. R. Sheldal, H. J. Ferguson, Paul Thompson, Mr. Sheffield, John Evenson, Ole Wierson, John Michaelson and others whose names have previously been listed in the Representative list of pioneers. We think most people agree with us in saying that to this band of pioneers belong largely the development of their part of the county and to them the writer concedes the credit and honor of making this the banner township of Story county. Others of this list have passed on namely R. W. Ballard, Jonas Duea, John Michaelson, Ole Wierson and Mr. Sheffield. For over 40 years Mr. and Mrs. Olson resided on the farm where were raised their four sons, O. A. of Minnesota, A. A. and George now residing on farms southeast of Roland and Carl who lives in California. All the children were present at the funeral Carl having arrived after the death of his mother. While residing on the farm there was established in Roland a firm entitled "A. Olson and Sons" the active members of this firm were O. A. and Carl who conducted successfully a general store for number of years. It will be observed from results that Mrs. Olson had acted well her part in the building up of a community that stands for all that is right and ignores all that is wrong. To her another kind we owe much, far more than we appreciate for to the early settlers belong most of the blessings the present generation now enjoys. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon when was laid to rest the remains of Mrs. Abel Olson one of our best citizens who died as she had lived a true believer in a life eternal to those who love the Lord. E. F. S.
