Stanley Nyle Strum I (Stan), 72 of Altoona, Iowa, formerly from Nevada, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Stan was born on August 14, 1943, in Maxwell, Iowa on the kitchen table, the third of seven children. His parents were Wendell Curtis and Viola Avonell (Johnson) Strum. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith in September 1943, at the Zion Lutheran Church in rural Radcliffe, Iowa. Stan attended school at North Grant Elementary, graduated from Nevada High School, and attended Southern Illinois University.

He married Kathleen Marie Klein Strum on May 11, 1965, in Prince George’s Courthouse in Upper Marlboro Maryland. From this union were three children Penelle Kathleen Strum, Elisa Anne Strum, and Stanley Nyle Strum II.

Stan joined the United States Army and was one of the fastest commissioned officers to reach the rank of Captain. He served in Vietnam and in the Korean DMZ.

His adventures in the Army also led to a lifelong friendship with David Paganucci and the opportunity to live across the world, including Japan, Hawaii, Korea, Maryland, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, and Iowa.

Stan enjoyed his friends of which he had many. If you live in Iowa, you know Stan Strum. He loved RAGBRAI, hunting, fishing, golfing, gambling, and taking his family on grand adventures and sharing the excitement of beautiful places and things. He had several collections including chess sets, mammoth teeth, etc.

Stan is survived by his children Allison (Craig), Penny (Stephanie), Elisa (Mike), and one son Stan; his grandchildren Michial Armstrong, Ashley Armstrong, Austin Gibson, Michaela Gibson, Tristan Gibson, Tate Gibson and Allan Wright; his brother Paul (Paula) Strum, his sister Sue (John); his brothers-in-law Joe Wise, Alvin (Charlotte) Klein, Leroy (Linda) Klein, sisters-in-law Margaret (Harry) Kapp, Connie and Dolores Strum. Many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Stan was preceded in death by his wife Kathleen on December 23, 2015, his siblings Wendell Vern “Bud” Strum, Glenda Wise, Wanda Valline and his brothers-in-law Robert Klein, James Klein and sister-in-law Valerie Klein. His parents Wendell Curtis Strum and Viola Avonell Strum.

Memorial services will be 6 p.m. Monday, May 16, at Memorial Lutheran Church (701 11th Street) in Nevada with Pastor Myron Herzberg officiating. Family will greet friends and a light supper will be served starting at 4:30 p.m. until service time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada or Nevada American Legion.
