Rosemarie “Grams” Cutchins, 77 years old, passed away Friday, April 29, 2016, at Serenity House Hospice in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was born August 20, 1938 in Altoona, Pennsylvania. She moved to Galesburg, Illinois, where her only child, Laurie Shinn (Feather), was born in 1959. She attended Carl Sandburg Junior College and worked for Sears in Galesburg before moving to Beverly Hills, Florida in 1979. In Beverly Hills, she worked at Seven Rivers Community Hospital as a patient services representative for 11 years and then as a project coordinator at the Lecanto Senior Center in Florida for over 10 years. She moved to Nevada Iowa in 2006 with her daughter and family at the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
Rosemarie loved to sew in her free time, as well as dance to the rhythm of the music. If you can hear the music playing, you can find Rose dancing. She absolutely loved flowers and colors. Every shirt or sweater she wore was filled with colors. Here is what life taught Rosemarie in her own words: “Believe in God as well as yourself. Communicate with him everyday. Learn life is not perfect, that God has a plan. The longer I live the longer I have to follow his plan. Laugh at yourself and do not take everything so seriously.” She really followed in her own words everyday.
Her brother Fred Riling, her mother Pauline Riling, and her father James Riling precede Rose in death. Rose is survived by her daughter, Laurie and spouse Tim of Nevada, Iowa, as well as her 6 grandchildren, Shannon and Amy of Dayton, Ohio, Melissa and spouse Justin, Krystyna and spouse Jason, Tiffany, and Zachary of Nevada, Iowa, her 6 great grandchildren, 1 niece and 2 nephews.
In her later years, her daughter Laurie brought her to Iowa due to Alzheimer’s disease. She wasn’t able to live on her own anymore. She spent a lot of time with 2 of her grandchildren, Tiffany and Zachary, since she was living at home with them. Here are some words from Tiffany with her experience living with Rosemarie:
“Alzheimer's is a scary disease. It chips away little by little at your brain, taking away your ability to know, to understand whom you are, to love the ones close to you, to eat, drink, or do the things you once wouldn't go a day without. It takes away your memories... Your most cherished thoughts. I've watched first hand and can't imagine the confusion Grams must have felt through all of this. But despite that, she always fought through it, not giving up on herself to that nasty disease. I remember countless times of us laughing with each other, making jokes and doing silly things. She tried to find the light in every situation. And man did she love to dance. Even as she was sitting down, you could see her feet constantly moving and jumping around as if she would never stop. I truly believe she has found her peace. Now she will be dancing in the stars for eternity. No more confusion and no more sadness. Grams will be laughing forever. I am glad I got to know her, even if she wasn’t the same person my mom knew. I will always remember our fun times and will never stop loving her.”
Rosemarie’s celebration of life will be held on May 28, 2016 at 2 p.m. at our home. We ask everyone who comes please bring seeds of your favorite flowers since we will be planting a garden in honor of Rosemarie to show the light she brought into our lives.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family in memory of Rose to be added to her beautiful garden.
